Alternative Road Trips for Travel Nurses

Camping is a great way for a traveler to roam from one assignment to another. You can be economical and have fun at the same time. Traveling to your next assignment can become a great outdoor adventure rather than a grueling road trip to be done and over with.

The American Automobile Associations CampBook Series provides information and rankings on over 4,000 private campgrounds and over 6,000 public camps. This list in combination with a Kamp-ground of America Book (KOA) or www.koa.com will send you on the road well equipped to land your tent just about anywhere. The KOA is the largest system of campsites in the world. You can also check out nationalparks.org/home.asp for yet a list of additional campsites.

Make sure to bring a friend when you camp. Also, plan on taking longer to get to your destination. You will want time to set up and enjoy the campsite in the evening and the morning before you take off. Bring a tent that is somewhat water proof and has a raincoat cover for the rains. Ideally, it is best to plan your route and know exactly where you want to stay and what they have to offer. However, if you are not much of a planner, you can do like me and starting looking for a campsite when you are ready to settle down for the night. When I traveled, I would take my KOA book and then look up the nearest site and take my chances. I wouldn’t recommend this though.

My best trip was the trip I took from Florida to Texas. I camped every night. I found my first alligator lake at the campground in Louisiana. What a memory. The trip was more fun than actually getting to the destination. There is nothing like going to sleep under the stars and waking up to the rays of the sun and fresh air in your tent.
